ORGANIZE YOUR HOME OFFICE TO MAXIMIZE YOUR WORK OUTPUT

An organized space is much more likely to be a productive space

The world of work is changing rapidly, and more people than ever are working from home. For some, they take to it like ducks to water and have no problem maintaining high levels of efficiency and productivity. For others (I’d bet most of us), staying productive in a home office is a challenge. One of the best ways to make your home office work for you is to keep it organized. You’ll be amazed at what just a little bit of decluttering and organizing can do to free up your mind for your work tasks.

Here are three fast tips for organizing your home office that you can start implementing right away:

1. STREAMLINE YOUR DESKTOP AREA

The first thing to understand is that clutter has a much bigger impact on you than you may realize. While we all know that excessive amounts of “stuff” can be distracting and impact our productivity, there is also an emotional aspect to being disorganized. Clutter creates a kind of visual pollution, and it’s a stressor. So take a good look at what you keep on top of your desk and be ruthless about removing anything—papers, electronics, knickknacks—that doesn’t serve a clear purpose.

2. ORGANIZE YOUR THINGS

Now that all unnecessary things have been banished, it’s time to organize what remains. There are tons of functional and fashionable desktop organizers available, from trays that hold your papers to containers that keep your writing utensils. Be choosy in selecting what you need (after all, you don’t want to add new clutter to your freshly cleared desk) and position the items you use the most within arm’s reach. Less frequently used items can be placed further away or stored in a drawer.

3. CONSIDER GOING DIGITAL FOR SOME THINGS

Papers tend to pile up like snowdrifts on any flat surface, don’t they? The good news is the digital age is here and it’s greatly reduced the need to keep paper copies of things. Recycle any documents that you already have duplicate versions of in digital format (bank and credit card statements are common ones). Then, consider what remaining paper documents you can scan and store on your computer.

Another thing you could do to get the office of your dreams is to get some expert help. A Professional Organizer will have the right ideas and the knowledge to follow them through to create a great home office for you.
